Manipulation Under Anesthesia

Have You Had Neck or Back Surgery Yet? MUA May Be Your Answer

This is a very real question that you need to ask yourself if you suffer from chronic neck or back pain.

What is MUA?

Manipulation Under Anesthesia or MUA for short is an old widely accepted safe and effective form of manipulative therapy that is used for certain selected types of back and neck problems.

Historically hundreds of articles have been written on various forms of MUA and within the past 8-12 years with advances in anesthesia techniques (monitored anesthesia care, or MAC) and manipulation techniques, MUA has become a real alternative for chronic prolonged conservative office based therapy or potential surgical intervention.

Reliable Clinical Indications for MUA
  • Low Back Disc Problems
  • Cervicogenic Headaches
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Frozen Shoulder
  • Torticollis
  • Failed Back Surgery
  • Chronic Recurring Back Pain

All doctors that are trained to perform MUA should be certified by an accredited professional institution, and must have attended at least 32 hours of postgraduate fellowship study. This is followed by proctorship by an experienced practitioner of MUA and then post course completion of at least 5 full cases before full staff privileges are granted.

Where Is MUA Performed

Certified MUA physicians perform MUA only in licensed facilities that meet the criteria for state and federal licensure. This procedure is only performed in hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers that have met these high standards for providing health care.

What's the difference between sick care and health care?
Sick care is largely about relieving or suppressing symptoms. Health care is about improving performance. While sick care is about how you feel, health care is about how you function. Sick care is what you do to treat an obvious problem, and health care is what you do to avoid the problem and advance your well-being.
What causes vertebral subluxation complexes?
Chiropractors acknowledge three types of stress: physical, chemical and emotional. When the adaptive capacity of your body is compromised, weakened areas along the spine can become involved. Muscles tighten, spinal joints lock up and nearby nerves are affected. The purpose of chiropractic care is to find these areas and restore balance, alignment and motion.
